Introduction



Amarnath is an ancient pilgrimage centre situated in the mighty Himalayas. Amarnath enshrines a natural Shivlangam of Ice. One can reach Amarnath by trekking through the mountains of Kashmir via the route of Pahalgam. The Amarnath cave is 86 miles from Srinagar. It is at a height of 13000 feet above sea level. Lord Shiva is worhshipped here in the form of a Shivlinga formed in the shape of ice block. It is made by drops of water which gets frozen naturally in the cave. 

The persons interested in going to Amarnath need to register themselves though the registration procedure from the local state government of Jammu and Kashmir. The information regarding this is publihsed in the month of June and Yatris could do this registration through the J&k toursim office in major cities of India.



Amarnath is 145 km east of Srinagar in Kashmir. An ice shiv linga is formed and it changes its size according to the seasons. It becomes bigger and smaller according to moon positions. The linga is around 6ft high on full moon day. every year on the full moon day of July- Aug(shrawan) the Shivlinga attains its full height. At that time there is festival at cave temple. It is said that lord Shiva appears on this day. 

The area of Amartnath is covered with snow from September to June. so the cave opens in July and Aug. This is the rainy season. About 25000 people make this pilgrimage each year. Amarnath is located in a glacial valley at 4175 meters (13700ft). This cave is 150 feet high and 90 feet long.
