Things to do and see

In winter there's skiing and sledging(man pulled). There are ski runs to suit all levels of experience and the meadow provides plenty of gentle slopes for beginners. Three poma lifts, one chairlift and the Gondola cable car provide access to three major ski runs. The skiing season is from 15 December to 15 April and an equipment hire shop near Gondola bottom station hires out all the gear for Rs 300 a day.

The Gondola takes about nine minutes to ascend the 400m to Kongdori station pathway up Apharwat mountain. A second stage due to open in 2003 will ascend to the top at 4114 m. Open all the year, its an easy way to start a walk above Gulmarg and on the way down you'll come across the turf-rooted winter houses of nomadic gujar. The houses not only accomodate the shephard families but also their livestocks. Snow almost coveres these low dwellings in the depths of winter. Pony rides are available most of the year and cost Rs 80 an hour. Gulmarg boasts the world highest green 18-hole golf course.
In the middle of a meadow on a slight ride is the locked up shell of 150 year old stMary's church -a reminder of British times in Gulmarg. There are several of their old huts still in the existence.
